Pumpkin and melon patch
Pumpkins, watermelons, and cantaloupes (with nasturtiums between): sprawling vines that need room to run.
An in-ground patch for the big vines: pumpkins for fall, and watermelons and cantaloupes for summer. They need sun, heat, and space.
What you'll make
Jack-o'-lanterns and pie pumpkins, and sweet melons in late summer.
When to plant
Warm season: plant after your last frost, once the soil is warm. Pumpkins for Halloween go in about 100 to 120 days before.
What to plant in an 8 × 12 ft patch
| Crop | Plants | Space |
|---|---|---|
| Cantaloupe | 4 | 16 squares |
| Pumpkin | 1 | 36 squares |
| Watermelon | 1 | 25 squares |
| Nasturtium | 19 | 19 squares |
Tall crops go along the north side, so they don't shade the rest.
Tips
- Plant in low mounds of rich soil, and water deeply once or twice a week.
- For a giant pumpkin, let each vine keep just one fruit.
- A watermelon is ripe when the curly tendril next to it dries and the spot underneath turns yellow.
- A ripe cantaloupe slips off the vine with a gentle push.
- Nasturtiums between the vines draw aphids away and bring in pollinators.
