Pickling cucumbers, dill, garlic, hot peppers, and beans for dilly beans.
Everything for a jar of pickles: crisp pickling cucumbers, dill heads, garlic, a hot pepper for kick, and green beans for dilly beans.
What you'll make
Dill pickles, refrigerator pickles, and dilly beans.
When to plant
Warm season for cucumbers, beans, and peppers. Garlic goes in the fall before.
What to plant in a 4 × 8 ft bed
| Crop | Plants | Space |
|---|---|---|
| Cucumber | 10 | 10 squares |
| Dill | 5 | 5 squares |
| Green beans (bush) | 63 | 7 squares |
| Hot pepper | 1 | 4 squares |
| Garlic | 20 | 5 squares |
Tall crops go along the north side, so they don't shade the rest. It also comes in 4 × 4 ft and 4 × 12 ft versions.
Tips
- Grow a pickling variety (Boston Pickling, National Pickling): they stay crisp.
- Pick cucumbers small, and every day or two once they start: big ones turn bitter and slow the plant down.
- Sow dill every few weeks, so there are fresh heads when the cucumbers come in.
- Trellis the cucumbers up the north side to save room and keep the fruit straight and clean.
