How to spot it
New leaves in spring pucker, thicken, and curl, turning red, purple, or pale green. Later they look powdery gray and drop.
What it does
The tree loses its first leaves and has to regrow them, which weakens it and cuts the crop.
What to do now
- Once you see it, it's too late to spray this year. Rake up fallen leaves, and water and feed the tree so it regrows.
Keep it away next time
- Spray copper or lime sulfur once in fall after the leaves drop, or in late winter before the buds swell.
- Grow resistant varieties.
