Cedar-apple rust

Disease Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae

Spots or blotches on leavesKnots, galls, or swellings

How to spot it

Bright yellow-orange spots on apple leaves in late spring. On nearby junipers and red cedars, brown galls grow orange jelly-like horns after spring rain.

What it does

Leaves drop early and the tree weakens; fruit can be spotted.

What to do now

  • Cut the galls off nearby junipers in winter.
  • Spray sulfur on apples from pink bud until a few weeks after bloom.

Keep it away next time

  • Plant resistant apples (such as Liberty, Freedom, or Redfree).
  • If you can, remove red cedars growing close to your apple trees.

Plants it affects
