These follow each zone's average frost dates, and include fall crops. Crops planted in fall for next year (garlic, spring bulbs) show under planting.
Tips for November
- Smother weeds in the paths. Lay cardboard over the paths and cover it with 3 or 4 inches of wood chips. It keeps weeds down for a season or more, and keeps your shoes out of the mud.
- Plant garlic in fall. Plant cloves pointy end up, 2 inches deep and 6 inches apart, a few weeks before the ground freezes. They grow roots over winter and make big bulbs by midsummer. Cover the bed with a few inches of straw.
- Clear out diseased plants. Pull plants with blight or wilt and put them in the trash, not the compost. The disease survives the winter in dead leaves and comes back next year.
- Pick greens from the outside in. Take the outer leaves of lettuce, kale, chard, and collards, and leave the center to keep growing. One planting keeps giving for weeks.
For a garden in the middle of the country (around zone 6). Colder places run a few weeks behind, warmer ones ahead.
